Webster describes his first meeting with Eugene Ormandy and gives his opinions concerning Ormandy as a conductor, the "Philadelphia Sound", the acoustics of the Academy of Music, and Ormandy's final years with the orchestra. In this context Webster also discusses the orchestra players' strike of 1966, the changes brought about by the hiring of Riccardo Muti as Music Director of the Philadelphia Orchestra, the controversy between Ormandy and composer, George Rochberg, and Ormandy's programming and view of contemporary music.
